Bit rate (VBR vs 320 CBR) and Multiple Formats

I found a similar topic posted a few weeks ago but apparently, it no longer allows additional posts, so I figured I'd chime in separately.

For some reason, it seems rare for listeners to prefer VBR over 320 CBR. My understanding is that while 320 might be higher quality, it's unnecessary because the vast majority of listeners can't hear the difference, especially when listening in a car or on a computer or mobile device. Personally, I prefer VBR, mostly due to storage space considerations. I realize that hard drive storage is cheaper than ever, but most of my flash drive devices still have limited space, especially when you factor in all the space taken up by apps, videos, and photos. I think the 40 or 50 MB saved on each album by using VBR can really add up.

To get to my last point (finally!), I read that eMusic is planning to offer multiple formats. Ideallly, it would be something like a certain site that starts with a "B" and ends with an "andcamp" and offers almost every format you can imagine. If anything, just offering a lossless format would allow users to re-encode into a space-saving format such as mp3 VBR.

Thanks for reading.

Great input. Thanks! I think you’ll be happy with the new formats that are on the way.
